I heard about this film via TikTok there was a podcast clip where someone said this movie was the best romcom of all time. So, naturally I thought I would give it a watch as I love me a romcom. Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman are the protagonists in this film, I’m a big fan of Bullock, seen a lot of her movies but I think this is the first time I’ve seen Pullman in a movie from what I can remember. Let’s dive into what I thought about this.
I knew the song at the start straight away This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole, having a little sing song to myself when the opening titles were running, so common to see this in an older film. I liked that there was narration from Lucy (Sandra Bullock) at the start giving a background on her younger family life/ her parents love. The rest of the music was Christmas related I didn’t realise when I started the film it was based around this time.
The setting of Chicago at Christmas was beautiful though, all the lights and decorations really complimented the scenes, giving a cosy vibe which is what you that time of year is all about. I have to say I love the fashion of Bullock’s character Lucy in the film also think I might need to head to the hairdressers and ask for her hairstyle as I’m obsessed with it.

I was surprised to see Peter Gallagher aka Peter (name in this film, not referring to him on a first name basis) aka Sandy Cohen when he pops up as the guy Lucy (Bullock) has a crush on and saves his life when he falls on the tracks. The way Lucy (Bullock) loves to chat and ramble along with what she is saying I feel like I can relate to her a lot and I love being able to do that with characters. She is also a tad dramatic which I can get on board with.
I love the dynamic between Lucy (Sandra Bullock) & Jack (Bill Pullman), Jack (Pullman) is very suspicious I feel at the start and as time goes on he seems to believe the situation Lucy (Bullock) is in which makes him jealous of his brother Peter (Peter Gallagher). Jack and Lucy have a lot of sweet moments like talking about Florence, falling over on the ice and getting her the snow globe.
There is a lot of light humor throughout this film and the storyline is easy to follow, adding the crazy family Peter (Peter Gallagher) & Jack (Bill Pullman) have you get some great moments: Jack’s (Pullman) heart to heart with his dad about his career, the back and forth they have and the families involvement with the end scene. I was tearing up when Lucy (Bullock) gave a speech to the family about falling in love them too, made my heart swell. The tie in of narration at the end like we had it the start I thought was a good touch, it is also when we understand the title of the movie itself, it also tied in Florence which was highlighted throughout the movie.
Overall, this was a lighthearted, fun, easy watch. I think I would watch this closer to Christmas time in future just cause of the cosiness and time of year in the film. The characters and storyline were captured and presented really well that I couldn’t help but be fully invested in what was going on. If you are a fan of Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman or Peter Gallagher then I think you should give this a watch.
